This is a super freak athlete from the Appalachia mountains. His father, an attorney in Hazard, Kentucky, told us his vertical is slightly over 43-inches and that Gavin won’t stop till it tops 45. What that means is his reported 40-time of 4.58-seconds isn’t even close. Johnson is much, much faster than that! This kid is really a physical specimen and should be firmly in the “Mr. Football” race his senior year in spite of his playing 1A football. We have said this many times. There are good teams and bad teams in the KHSAA and they span all six (6) of Kentucky’s classifications. Enjoy this feature and let’s keep it comfortable out there, Kentucky. We started this journey we call Kentucky Prep Gridiron reporting mainly on middle school players. When our initial middle school stars matriculated to high school, we came with them. We don’t cover middle school football as much as we once did but we do cover it. Today, we report on a kid who may be the best 8th-grade QB in the commonwealth of Kentucky. He is darn sure athletic. Alexander Schuster looks to battle it out for a slot along the interior offensive line for Kentucky’s premier high school football program. It is hard to find the field for Trinity until your junior season no matter who you are. Schuster has worked his tail off and has bided his time. It is his day. Trinity is coming off a 13-2 season and yet another 6A KHSAA football title. All told, Trinity has won 29-championships and favored to make it 30. Schuster’s frame and growth potential are big pluses for him as he is our Big Ass Fans Kentucky Comfort Creator this week. Let’s keep it cool out there KY.

Chase Bell and Camden Page look to battle it out preseason for the QB-slot at South Warren vacated by Bryce Button’s graduation. South Warren is coming off a 12-2 season where it was arguably the second best team in 5A in ’24. Where will they figure into the 6A title chase? Well, we don’t know. We would suppose they will go as far as either Page or Bell carries them. Chase Bell is a ’28 guy with an incredible frame and athleticism so impressive Maryland has already offered. Bell’s frame and growth potential are carrying the day for him as he is our Big Ass Fans Kentucky Comfort Creator this week. Let’s keep it cool out there KY.

There was a movie released by Disney in 1994 entitled “Angels in the Outfield.” It was a remake of a 1951 film of the same name. The remake starred Danny Glover, Tony Danza, and Christopher Lloyd and resulted in two (2), made for TV sequels. The movie was about a young child, in foster care, sarcastically told his family would reunite “when the Angels win the pennant” by his newly widowed father. Roger, the young boy who is the movie’s protagonist, prays for such and a group of angels appeared to help the team. At the end of the day, it was explained that while the “Angels in the outfield” helped the team surge to the top of the division, the “Angels” could not help the team win a title or championship. Well, Lincoln County looks to have gotten some Angelic assistance of its own in a 6’3,” 335-pound OL transfer from Southwestern with the surname of Flores. There are no heavenly imposed limitations on his assistance. Enjoy the feature.

Dayton Kron is a talented kid who looks to land at the next level easily. Kron is being courted heavily by Hanover, Hampton-Syndney, and DePauw University, among others. One secret to his success is that the 6’1,” 225-pounder can play DE or can long snap. That type versatility is extremely important for a small college program who may find offering Kron is a “ton of bang for its buck.” In any event, Kron is performing at a very high level for a team which plays in Kentucky’s largest competitive classification. Christian Shackelford is built exactly like the “big boys” want to see him. He’s 6’7,” 290-pounds and sports a 3.8-GPA. Shackelford got six (6) games of run over his sophomore season and that isn’t too bad considering LCA had the most senior laden group of trench men in the KHSAA a year ago at any level of competition. There will be plenty of competition to fill some of these holes in ’25 resulting from the Spring ’24 commencement ceremonies. Enjoy this look at a ’27 who seems destined to grow into one of his graduating class’s very best offensive linemen before it is said and done. Brayden Fultz is a player who reports quite a bit of versatility, particularly on the Kentucky 5A level. Fultz reports playing guard, DE, DT, MLB, and FB. Of these positions we like him best at either guard, where he reports playing, and offensive center, where we think he should get a long look. We have talked to some recruiters who have asked us about him. At 6’0,” 290 with a 315-pound bench press, a quarter ton back squat (505), and a 255-pound power clean, this kid has the strength, power, and explosion programs covet at the center slot. Sam Simpson went 32-years coaching at two places not easy to win ball games. Marion County was five years and the other 27 were spent in Lexington at Henry Clay High. Simpson won 193-games at Henry Clay, taking the Blue Devils to one of its two visits to the title game. Henry Clay beat St. Francis DeSales back in 1981 for the 4A title under Jack Bell. Simpson would take the team on an improbably four (4) game run through the playoffs which ultimately ended in the title game against Mike Glasur’s Tigers. Well, that ended up like matchups with St. Xavier often do, with the Tigers leaving the field with victory. Enjoy this installment of our “Slow Motion Replay” series.
