Last season we thought we were going to have to start calling them the “Heartbreak Wildcats” if things didn’t start trending differently. Trigg County dropped consecutive, one-point defeats to the toughest of competition under very strange and almost lightening-striking-ish type situations. Still, the play the team was getting from its then-sophomore/rising junior QB was extraordinary. Cade Scott was and still is a superlatively good, three sport, varsity athlete who excels at FB (QB), basketball (SG), and baseball (OF/LHP). He completed nearly 75% of his passing attempts and consistently put the offense in situations where it should and, often did, thrive. Nehemiah Bailey got more PT than any other freshman on the last Hoptown roster. The two Christian County schools will combine in the Fall of ’26 and form one ball club. That team will have loads of talent. That team should be right formidable as a 6A, first district team. Who will quarterback this team? Last year’s starter at Hoptown is returning and Jasiah McCarley threw for a little over 2,000 yards and 20-TDs a year ago. McCarley will be a junior in ’26 and has an advantage in production and playing time. However, Bailey is 6’3,” 195-pounds and he sure passes the “eye test.” Today we feature Bailey and discuss his prospects unseating the incumbent QB-1. We continue on with our offseason coverage not really discussing players of the week so much as discussing featured players and prospects. Gage Chapman is simply among the best multi-phase football talents in the Kentucky-wide, KHSAA football game today at any level. Gage came up from middle school among the commonwealth’s most talented players and has done nothing but confirm we were all right about him from the beginning. Chapman is only going to improve over his senior season, particularly on offense where he should get many more opportunities. Chapman is the kind of kid coaches want to coach and, in the end, that may be the finest compliment which can be paid to him (or any other kid). Enjoy the feature.

Carter Smith is indicative of the type youth movement the Lakers are enjoying since bringing on Coby Lewis to head its football program. Smith is a young, two-way lineman with a sturdy frame and very good power numbers in the weight room. Kenyon Cunningham is a kid with a ton athletic ability and potential who was put in a very tough spot for any freshman both in the semi-state and then in the championship game. He will be called on to be “The Man” going forward as senior Wyatt Robbins has exhausted his eligibility and is headed to play football for the Murray State Racers. Cunningham is a ranked basketball prospect in the commonwealth among ’29s and is already enjoying success as a varsity basketball player on a 12-2 ball club. Cunningham is the kind of kid coaches want to coach and, in the end, that may be the finest compliment which can be paid to him. Enjoy the feature.

Luis Ira is a ’26 left guard who was an unsung hero for his Laker ball club which experienced, under first year head football coach, Coby Lewis quite the remarkable turnaround. The Lakers went from winless in ’24 to six (6) wins in ’25 and proved a competitive spirit along the way. People around this program are excited about the strides it is making in a city (Murray, KY) getting known as a hotbed of football competitiveness on Kentucky’s western end. Enjoy the feature.

If there is a matter on which we would readily wager it is whether or not Bryson Ford will be a superstar at the HS level. Ford rendered an all-state, caliber performance over his freshman season playing on a roster in its last year of existence for a high school which is being closed at year’s end and subsumed into a conglomerate high school which figures to have the largest enrollment in KY among public high schools. Ford led the team in tackles as a freshman and was among the leaders in TFLs. That TFLs stat is impressive as getting freshman to play “down hill” is no easy tack. Bryce Huseman is a guy who only got run his sophomore year in eight games. That notwithstanding, the kid had one heck of a year and studded out statistically in many critical categories. For the Trigg County Wildcats to reach the program’s full potential, the program will have to harness and develop more talent like Huseman. This offseason will be absolutely critical in regard to that goal.
