Storm Warning: Hopkins County Central lost a game to lightening, Mid-point Report Card, Russellville begins second half

Like we have done in prior seasons, now the games are finally here, we will take the last week’s action and break it down and then look at the road ahead. We got an unexpected off week when lightening precluded our playing Kentucky Country Day in a game which will not be rescheduled. We have a winnable game on the road tomorrow night against a team with tradition, second to none on this end of the commonwealth. Russellville High School is struggling this year (0-5) but this program played for the 1A title just a few short years ago (2021) and has won three titles (1980, ’83, and ’90) while playing for four (4) more (1964, ’66, ’87, and 2021) Enjoy this feature and get out to the games this weekend. In the world of Kentucky high school football, a world about which we are undoubtedly familiar, the Trinity/St. Xavier game is often referred to as “The Game.” It is so big neither on campus stadium is viewed as sufficient to host the event. This is why it gets annually played at the stadium which hosts University of Louisville football games instead. This year neither team has lost a game to a Kentucky high school. That changes this weekend. We have taken a deep dive into the matchup, done our homework/research, and have forecast a winner. Let’s see how closely we get this or if we miss altogether. Very quietly, almost without notice, Coby Lewis, in his first season at the helm of the Lakers, is turning in a whale of a season and turning a lot of heads around the commonwealth in coaching circles. He has “The Lakers” out to a 4-1 start, the best start it started the 2016 season with a 6-1 record and one of Western Kentucky’s great defensive units. This week’s Player of the Week, Logan Smith, enjoyed just a spectacular game, but then again, he has been doing things like this his entire Laker career. Enjoy this feature on this wonderfully gifted and talented young football star.

We thought we would dip in and cover a final Blackcat before we move along from Prestonsburg. P-burg doesn’t get enough coverage owing to being a small enrollment high school in an isolated and remote part of the commonwealth of Kentucky. We were watching Breathitt and Hazard play last Friday night on the Bluegrass Sports Nation. What stood out to us was the intricate way in which Coach Chandler and his crew utilized screens to chunk off yardage. There was one screen in particular where the ball was rifled to Gavin Johnson and he ran away from Breathitt’s back-third like they were being run in a plowed field. Talk about your “separation speed,” Johnson was showing it off and then some. The fact of the matter, as we approach mid-season, Gavin Johnson has amply demonstrated his being as good a multi-phase athlete as there is anywhere in Kentucky at the small school level (1A, 2A, and 3A). This kid will have to be discussed heading into next year as a possible “Mr. Football” candidate or my name isn’t “Friday Night Fletch.” We all know it is…

We are very pleased to welcome Lasaters Coffee & Tea to our growing family of advertisers. The Kelley family has a very long history in the local football industry and several of the Kelleys have had their numbers retired owing to their familial history of playing excellence. Thursday night (September 11, 2025) the Maroons from Madisonville North Hopkins found themselves facing judgement day. What else can a team term facing the defending KHSAA football champion, 4A’s top ranked team, and Kentucky’s 8th best football team regardless of enrollment or classification. The “Mops on Top” made for themselves the best case it could and Markezz Hightower rested his case for Mr. Football. All that is left now is to await the jury’s return and report of its verdict. We tried to tell everyone Prestonsburg was back last year when the team posted 11-wins against 2-losses. Everyone got too caught up in P-burg’s late season loss to Breathitt, a Breathitt squad with a very young offensive backfield which had grown up quite a bit by the 1st of November. Anyway, Prestonsburg just beat the best team on its schedule in overcoming Hazard in Prestonsburg this pas Saturday. We had a slight misstep at home with North Hopkins this past Friday night and the trip to Fryar Stadium to play Fort Campbell means the sledding will not get much easier. Fort Campbell has made some personnel reassignments which should make the team harder than the one the staff has seen on film. Enjoy this feature and get out to the games this weekend.
